About the Institute

The Odum Institute supports social science teaching and research at UNC. We provide a range of consulting services and offer more than 70 workshops a year, a Certificate Program in Survey Research Methodology, and a number of ICPSR summer courses. In addition, we operate a world-renowned data archive and actively seek out partnerships with other scholars, research teams, and Centers and Institutes to pursue research grants consistent with our mission.

History of the Institute

Founded in 1924 by Howard W. Odum, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science is the oldest university-based interdisciplinary social-science research institute in the United States.

Summary of Services

The Odum Institute provides consulting services in quantitative analysis, qualitative analysis, survey methodology, spatial analysis, managing grants, and archiving data.

Hours: 9 am to 6 pm

Statistical consulting services at the Odum Institute computer lab are available from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Our mission is to help grow and lead a world-class social science research infrastructure at UNC Chapel Hill to ensure that researchers can conduct scientifically rigorous research that contributes to better lives for the citizens of North Carolina and the world. The Institute enables researchers at UNC to produce important research, helps them broaden the scope and impact of their research, and contributes to the training of the next generation of leaders and researchers in social science.

Visiting the Institute

The Odum Institute is located on the second floor of Davis Library in the heart of the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.

Special Research Projects

The Odum Institute is engaged in a number of special projects, including the Citizen-Soldier Support Program.
