Map and Directions to the Odum Institute

Driving Directions

From Interstate 40 (from Raleigh and points east):

  • Take Exit 273-B (Hwy 54) towards Chapel Hill
  • Continue straight for 4 miles to the top of the hill
  • Park at UNC Visitor Parking Lot (Raleigh Road Visitor Lot) on right before the traffic light

From Interstate 85 (coming from Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro):

  • Take I-40 East towards Raleigh
  • Take Exit 273 and turn right at the end of the exit ramp
  • Continue straight for 4 miles to the top of the hill
  • Park at UNC Visitor Parking Lot (Raleigh Road Visitor Lot) on right before traffic light

From Interstate 85 North (from Durham and points north):

  • Follow I-85 to intersection with Hwy 15-501 South
  • Follow 15-501 South towards Chapel Hill; the highway will divide
  • Remain on 15-501 South (Bypass) bearing left, away from Franklin Street
  • Turn right at Highway 54 Exit towards "UNC-Chapel Hill"
  • Continue to the top of the hill
  • Park at UNC Visitor Parking Lot (Raleigh Road Visitor Lot) on right just before traffic light

Parking

University Parking

There is no visitor parking available at Davis Library. Visitors may park in the visitor pay lots and metered spaces listed below. Rates vary from 75 cents to $2 per hour. Metered spots are limited to 3 hours maximum allowed. However, short-term meters exist where the maximum activation time is 30 minutes. **Parking may be limited due to special events, so please allow yourself plenty of time to find a parking space.**

The metered spaces in town are usually limited to one or two hours, and are monitored closely.

Town of Chapel Hill Parking Lots

Open 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday-Thursday; 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday.

  • the corner of Rosemary and Henderson Streets (Rosemary Street is one block north of Franklin Street)
  • the corner of North Columbia and Rosemary Streets
  • the corner of Church and West Rosemary Streets
  • 150 E. Rosemary Street
  • 415 W. Franklin Street

Metered parking spaces are available on Franklin Street (one-hour maximum) and on Rosemary, Henderson, and Columbia Streets (two-hour maximum).

For courses to be held at the Friday Center only, parking permits will be issued to registrants to park in the Friday Center Visitor lot for no charge. Be sure to not park in the Park and Ride Permit Lot.

Walking Directions

Walking Directions from NC 54 Visitor's Lot

After you have parked, walk toward the entrance of the parking lot.  Turn right out of the parking lot onto NC 54.  Continue straight onto South Rd. at the light.  Continue on South Rd.  passing the School of Government and soccer field on your left.  After you pass Raleigh St., you will see the Student Union on your right.  Walk up the stairs directly past the Student Union. After you reach the top of the stairs, continue straight.  Davis Library will be on your right. 

Walking Directions from Morehead Lot

After you have parked, walk toward the Morehead Planetarium and then walk past it on the right. Continue on this sidewalk. Pass Howell Hall (on your left) and Davie Hall (also on your left). You will come to Cameron Ave. Cross this street to the large fountain in front of Bynum Hall. Pass the fountain on your right and continue walking past Bynum Hall on your right. After Manning Hall, turn left, then right. You will see Davis Library on your left.

Walking Directions from Swain Lot

After you have parked, cross Cameron Avenue and turn east (away from the stop light). Walk past the Campus Y and South Building on your right and the Old Well on your left. Turn right into the circular driveway in front of Bynum Hall (the building facing the water fountain and Cameron Avenue). Pass the fountain on your right and continue walking past Bynum Hall on your right. Go past manning Hall, then turn left, then right. You will see Davis Library on your left.

Walking Directions from the Carolina Inn

After you have parked, cross South Columbia and proceed on Cameron Avenue, keeping to the right side of the street. You will pass Peabody Hall and Memorial Hall on your right. You will also pass the Old Well on your left. Continue on, passing the Playmakers building on your right. Look for a parking circle (Bynum Circle Lot) with a fountain on your right. (The fountain is inactive in the winter. If you come to Carr Building on the right, you've gone too far.) Pass the fountain on your right and continue walking past Bynum Hall on your right, then past Manning Hall. Turn left after manning, then turn right. You will see Davis Library on your left.

Walking directions from the Franklin Hotel

Take a right as you leave the front entrance of the hotel. Continue down the sidewalk and cross Mallette Street. Keep walking on the sidewalk; you will pass University Square on your right. At the stoplight, cross Columbia Street, then turn right and walk along the sidewalk. You will pass the Ackland Art Museum on your left. When you get to the next intersection, cross Cameron Street. Take a left and walk along the sidewalk (on the right side of the street). You'll pass Peabody Hall and Memorial Hall on your right. You will also pass the Old Well on your left. Continue on, passing the Playmakers building on your right. Look for a parking circle (Bynum Circle Lot) with a fountain on your right. (The fountain is inactive in the winter. If you come to Carr Building on the right, you've gone too far.) Pass the fountain on your right and continue walking past Bynum Hall on your right, then past Manning Hall. Turn left just past Manning, then right and look for Davis Library (which is an eight-story building).
