Public Opinion Data

  • Louis Harris Data Center
  • National Network of State Polls
  • Carolina Polls
  • Southern Focus Polls
  • General Social Surveys

The Institute maintains a variety of public opinion data, which is described below. Many of these data can be searched on the Institute's Dataverse. Staff members can also assist researchers in locating surveys not available at the Institute, and in using other item indexes. More information on the POR list is available. To subscribe to Odum Institute listservs, send the following command: subscribe *** Jill Doe (where *** is the name of the listserv and Jill Doe is your name) in the body of an e-mail to listproc@irss.unc.edu. Please contact Jon Crabtree, 962-0517, for assistance.

From 1991 through 2000, the Institute served as the national headquarters for the National Network of State Polls, a 58-member organization devoted to promoting high-quality public opinion polls of state populations. The Institute encouraged members of the organization to archive their state poll data at the Odum Institute, resulting in the largest available collection of state-level data. The archive contains nearly 70,000 items from more than 660 studies, contributed by 44 survey organizations in 25 states. More than 600,000 respondents contributed to the surveys. For more information about these studies, contact Dave Sheaves.

Other public opinion data at the Institute include the Carolina Polls and Southern Focus Polls, Gallup polls from the U.S. and other countries, General Social Surveys collected by the National Opinion Research Center, and polls from major broadcasting networks and newspapers. Gallup and Harris press releases are also available. For more information, call David Sheaves, 966-3348.
