North Carolina Data
Carolina Poll
Data from or about North Carolina archived at the Institute include data from: the Carolina Poll, a public opinion poll conducted since 1976 by the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication and cosponsored between the early 1980s and 2000 by the Odum Institute; the NC Citizens' Surveys conducted by the NC Office of State Budget; and polls conducted by the Raleigh News and Observer and the Charlotte Observer.
Odum Institute Data Archive
The Odum Institute data archive Web page provides links to several sources of data about North Carolina, including the NC Vital Statistics page, the NC State Data Center, NC Department of Agriculture, the State Center for Health Statistics, the State Demographics Unit, and the State Department of Public Instruction.
Log Into North Carolina (LINC)
Another useful source of North Carolina data is LINC (Log Into North Carolina), an interactive database developed and maintained by the North Carolina State Data Center, of which the Institute is a part. LINC provides statistical data produced by state and federal agencies. More than 900 variables are available for the state of North Carolina and its counties, and in many cases for subcounty geographic areas. LINC can be accessed from any terminal in the Odum Institute Statistical Computing Laboratory, and some LINC data are available over the Web. Call Odum Institute statistical consulting, 966-1021, or Ed Bachmann, 962-0512, for assistance.
North Carolina Data-Net
The Odum Institute sponsors North Carolina Data-Net, which evolved from an Institute Faculty Working Group in 1992 to promote communication among faculty, graduate student, and undergraduate student researchers working with North Carolina data. Contributors to Data-Net are particularly interested in gathering information about informal local surveys and class projects conducted around the state. North Carolina Data-Net contains short research reports on topics of interest to a range of social scientists and others, as well as information about data being collected around the state. To be added to the NC DataNet print newsletter mailing list, contact Thad Beyle, 962-0404.
